Weaknesses

Post by Siphon » Wed Sep 16, 2015 10:40 am

Okay so I had a fun reading the link that was posted for ideas for possible superhero powers. But something that I feel would help as well is a list of complications/weaknesses for characters to counterbalance said powers. The next list and descriptions is not original, its in fact most of it is pulled from the Champions PnP manual and edited by me to make sense in this context. Once more this is just a list of possible ideas for weaknesses.

Hope this helps!

ACCIDENTAL CHANGE: Causes a character with at least two forms or identities to change between them accidentally or involuntarily at times. Usually this comes to the hindrance of the character, for instance a wolfman changing back into normal form involuntarily in combat, due to someone blocking the moon.

DEPENDANCE: Causes a character to suffer negative effects (possibly even injury or death) if he is unable to get a certain substance or item. Examples include an aquatic superhero who becomes ill without frequent contact with seawater, or a character whose powers eventually stop working if he can’t recharge them with his mystic power battery.

ADDICTION: Addiction must cause damage, incompetence, or weakness. Addictions usually cause deprivation at least once a day at first, and this interval becomes shorter the longer the character remains addicted.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES: Enables others to easily recognize the character, due to features which are difficult to conceal. Examples include distinctive traits (unusual height, extra arms, a strange odor), identifying clothing or markings (a uniform, a gang tattoo), unusual habits (always tells puns, always leaves a lily at the scene of his crimes), and the like. Not being able to conceal identities is a big deal in Celestial City since Metahumans are prohibited by the law.

ITEM DEPENDANT: This one applies to characters that need a certain item to be powered or work. For instance a mystic hero that can only cast spells if he wearing his magical necklace.

POWERS HAVE CHARGES: This one means that the use of the of a power is very limited. For instance an archer can't produce infinite arrows, a gun that can be fired 2 times and so on and so forth.

NEED TO CONCENTRATE: The hero to be able to use his powers needs to concentrate, so anything that interrupts concentration more than likely will render him helplesss.

POWERS NEED LINE OF SIGHT: If the hero is unable to see their target, he is unable to use their powers. This applies for instance for a mentalist who can't see due to a smoke grenade, and he can't target his powers.

POWERS NEED SKIN CONTACT: If the powers need to have actual contact with the skin to work. In other words, these powers wont work on robots, skeletons, plants, etc. If the target is heavily armored this could be an issue as well.

GESTURE DEPENDANT: The character needs to be able to use their hands to do gestures in order to make their powers work. An example of this is a magic caster who needs his hands in order to write sigils in the air or an extremely fast hero who needs his legs free in order to move super fast.

INCANTATION DEPENDANT: The character needs to be able to speak in order to use their powers. Examples of this are a hero who produces supersonic waves by screaming or a magical sorcerer who needs to say incantations out loud to make their spells work.

ENRAGED/BERSERK: Causes a character to lose control of himself when confronted by certain situations or stimuli. Examples include a villain who loses his temper when his plans are thwarted, or a beast who frenzies at the scent of blood. A Berserk character behaves as described above, but he attacks the nearest target (not just the one that made him angry), so he’s a danger to friend and foe alike. Once he Knocks Out or kills that target, he then attacks the next-nearest target (and so on until he regains control).

PHYSICAL COMPLICATION: Examples of this include a character with one eye or no hands. Physical Complications can also represent mental or psychological issues that cannot be overcome with willpower, mind control or therapy. This weakness can't be compensated by the characters power (for instance a blind character that can see perfectly through magic).

PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPLICATION Restricts a character’s choices and behavior. Examples include codes of morality or conduct (Code Against Killing; Chivalrous; Code of Honor), fears or hatreds (Fear of Heights, Hatred of Foreigners; Fear of the Dark), and strong personality traits or compulsions (Greedy; Overconfident; Will Not Lie). Psychological Complication traits are not necessarily “bad” (a code of honor may be admirable, for example), but they’re still restrictive because they require a character to make choices or take courses of action that may not always be the most advantageous ones available

SUSCEPTIBILITY: Causes a character to take damage from a substance or condition harmless to most people. Examples include an alien superhero hurt by exposure to debris from his exploded home world, or a demon who can’t bear to be on holy ground.

UNLUCK: Causes misfortune to befall a character when things are going too smoothly. Examples of when Unluck might arise include when the character is winning easily in a fight, depending on a sure thing, succeeding easily, taking a simple task for granted, and so forth.

VULNERABILITY: Causes a character to take more effect from a particular type of attack. Examples include an icy supervillain who takes extra damage from fire/ heat attacks, so on and so forth.

It is a great list :)
