The Shit You May Not Do

Post by Mr. Strong » Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:13 pm

In addition to the rules recently promulgated regarding scene interruptions (which players have mostly been very attentive to, and have followed) there are other far more basic and general rules which seem to be being ignored quite frequently, as of late.

So, in this post I am going to discuss (as stated in the title) the shit that you may not do, not only here, but on any other RP sim you may find yourself (un)fortunate enough to be a part of. Questions can be posted publicly, or sent to any admin privately. This all fairly basic, but there are some finer points that are beyond the scope of this sort of general post.

Let's get started:

Auto-Hitting: This is to make your post as though you are an omniscient narrator who knows exactly what will happen. It is to forget that you are only in control of your own character. To put simply, your post stops at the end of your reach. Everything you do is just "attempted". You "try" to punch someone in the face, you don't "punch them in the face."

If we're talking about "Firin' mah laser", that too is only "attempted" if we're talking about some kind of undefendable mega-attack. Goku gets slapped just before he can cut loose with his Spirit-Bomb all the time. You aren't better than Goku (unless you're Superman).

Your attacks can be prevented (through reasonable means).

Meta-Gaming: Using knowledge that your character should not have, or drawing conclusions that aren't supported by the amount of information your character has. This includes acting like your character who is /not/ Sherlock, is Sherlock.

You don't know the secret evil plans .. but you /might/ be able to be suspicious. If you're too suspicous, you'll be questioned on what basis your character has to be that way.

Metagaming is a pain in the ass, because it leads to these difficult knots that we have to untangle. We ask how a character knows a secret, and they heard it from Sue, who heard from Mary, who heard from Paul ... and Paul metagamed the info out of his ass. Now we have to tell you, Sue, Mary, and Paul that NONE of you know this secret.

Powergaming: This is very broad section that covers a variety of things, including the Auto-hitting mentioned above. However, to put it simply it's RPing selfishly. It's caring more about your character winning than what makes for a good story. It's trying to win at all costs, even when your character shouldn't win. It's focusing on making your character more powerful, regardless of whether that's gonna progress the overall plot, or get others involved.

We're all in this together, believe it or not. Your hero is shit without villains to oppose. Your villain is shit without heroes trying to foil them (or foiling them). When you focus too much on winning, you kill the other person's enthusiasm and you slowly erode the sim. ... Apart from what we'll do to you for it, you're shooting yourself in the foot, because no one's gonna want to play with you just so you can make their character look like shit.

... This is not the same as being competitive or playing-to-win. You should use your character's abilities and skills, and your own ability to strategize, to come up with a plan to win. You just shouldn't be butt-hurt if they use theirs in such a way that your plan doesn't work.

At all times, keep in mind that your "foe" is really your partner. If the scene is going places that aren't working, you should talk to each other about it. If you are both adamant that your character should win over the other, you need to be smart enough to come up with some distraction that'll allow one to escape/retreat, or abandon the fight.

Remember that even Superman gets knocked down a peg. Invincible characters who dodge every hit, never get a scratch, can get through a fight without a hair out of place, and above all never lose are boring. Think about Die Hard. Die Hard isn't a great movie because John McClane gets through the entire movie by mowing down everyone from a distance. He's awesome to watch because he's just a guy, a guy who doesn't even have shoes. He gets bloodied and beaten. The fights have tension because we don't "know" he's going to win, and each fight leaves him weaker, more injured, less likely to survive the next one. By the end of the movie, he's an absolute wreck. But he earns the win he gets by literally crawling through glass first, hiding out in the vents, and relying on others to help him, not by being unhittable.

Under Siege is Die Hard on a boat. It stars Steven Segal as the biggest bad-ass on the boat, who manages to beat the shit out of, or shoot, everyone. No one beats him up, or really gives him much trouble. He's in perfect health when he confronts the Final Boss in a (less than) 1-minute long knife fight. He gets cut exactly once, and it won't even require stitches. (btw... Don't get into a knife fight, you will be cut really bad, irl) He makes Tommy Lee Jones look like a total bitch, and doesn't even break a sweat. He takes the knife from him USING HIS TEETH! (This will not work), which means Tommy Lee Jones has a grip more feeble than a 10 year old.

Under Siege sucks.

Die Hard is awesome.

Hell.. Jaimie can slow time and has superhuman reflexes. She STILL gets hit. There are times she is strolling through a fight, but in order to avoid everything would exhaust her time stop, constantly. Not to mention her senses, even with those reflexes and bullet time are still.. human. Unless you have eyes on the back of your head, or 360 degrees.. you have a blind spot. Even the Byakugan in Naruto.. a ninja power for 360 degrees sensing.. has a blindspot.

That being said: things to -do -instead-:

Be willing to take hits. Even if super tough, get hit, it doesn't have to be gamechanger or cut open. Punching Superman is a hit. Doesn't help you any..but its a hit. Shows bending.

Be willing to lose as much, or more than, you lose. If you're smart work conditions so that even if you lose, there is a root of victory, a set up for a future rp. Your character get the shit beat out fo them? Well those chemicals you did get dumped into the water.. aren't erased. Use those at a future time.

Be willing to have your character have one-two main points to it. Super genius? ok. You don't need to be super smart, tough, strong, everything. Specialize. Play off the strengths and weaknesses of eachother.

Be willing to have noncombat powers. One of Jaimies is effectively detective mode from Arkham. Combat? useless. But it fits the mental and puzzle solving aspects perfectly. Things like that bring a character to life.

Be respectful of others resources and skill. If someone can only afford a cheap mask? Who cares..they made an effort to disguise. Work with that person..and never 'obviously' know it unless they agree.

Just to reiterate the points the others have said. The idea is to tell a good story. This is not a computer driven RPG. Good stories lead to good roleplay, and that's what we're about.
"I can remember, standing by the wall. The guns, shot above our heads, and we kissed, as though nothing could fall. And the shame was on the other side. Oh we can beat them forever and ever. Then we could be heroes just for one day."

It should not be a competition. You don't get points for how many fights you win. The only person who enjoys playing with an untouchable character is the person playing the untouchable character ( although a good role player would find that boring very quickly ).

Word does spread, even if nothing is reported or said in public. When someone gets a reputation for frustrating others or any of the above points, soon, no one will want to play with that person.

It can also give the SIM a bad reputation. If someone new comes to play and their first experience is with these frustrating player types, they will give up, not come back, and possibly tell others about their bad experience. That reduces the people we have to play with. All sims need a fresh flow of new good people.
